GRANTS, N.M. – This past Saturday, April 11, the new code enforcer and community members came together for the annual Community Spring Clean-Up.

The code enforcer, Shannon DeVine, expressed her commitment to transforming Grants into a more beautiful city, highlighting the importance of moving forward in the right direction while actively engaging with its residents. DeVine explained that the driving force behind her new role is, “Honestly, to help make the city a better place.”

One of the primary goals for the cleanup was to tackle trash accumulation in high-traffic areas, notably around Walmart and the Tractor Supply vicinity. Recognizing that this area is often the first point of contact for visitors, DeVine is determined to make a positive impression. Residents came together to remove trash and debris from the area, starting at eight in the morning, then dumping them in the trash containers placed at the Grants Police Station.

“[I’m going to] start putting out a lot of Education out there,” Devine said, emphasizing the importance of community education in maintaining cleanliness and compliance with city codes. To combat areas suffering from significant trash build-up, DeVine explained that the plan involves reaching out directly to property owners. Sending letters to remind them of their responsibilities and addressing compliance issues head-on is a crucial part of the strategy. Devine said, “We have already started sending out letters… letting people know to clean up your stuff.”

Shannon Devine explained, “There's always challenges in any role you have. There's challenges, and it's just basically brainstorming trying to figure out the best ways to address the challenges.” She went on the emphasize that the community’s involvement is essential. “If you’r tired of complaining, do something,” she urged others to participate in maintaining cleanliness. “Thirty minutes can make a difference.” Engagement is encouraged through various means, including contacting the code enforcer office to collect trash bags for community clean-ups. DeVine added, “[Let’s] make a big difference… Let’s just all work together and… get it done.”
