Helen Louise Fitch
Helen Louise Fitch, 98, of Grants, New Mexico, passed peacefully on Palm Sunday, March 29, 2026.
Born on June 10, 1927, in Cubero, New Mexico, to Emilia Baca and Jesus Arvizo, Helen was raised by her grandmother, Maria B. Arvizo, who instilled in her the values of love, faith, and devotion to family and community— principles that guided her throughout her life.
Helen graduated from Grants Union High School in 1945, where she played basketball and developed a lifelong love of sports. She remained a passionate supporter of the 49ers, New Mexico Lobos, and the Grants Pirates, especially when her grandsons carried on the Pirate tradition.
In 1945, she married her high school sweetheart, William “Bill” Fitch. Together they built their life in Grants and raised six children: Geraldine, Anthony, Emily, Debbie, Pam, and Rodney. After 37 years of marriage, Helen entered a new chapter of life with strength and resilience, continuing to center her world around her family.
A dedicated and hardworking woman, Helen embraced each role she held with grace. Her professional life ranged from P.E. teacher at GHS in the 1940s, to working at Thrifty Mart in the 1970s, and ultimately retiring after 25 years with the Cibola County Road Department.
In retirement, Helen found joy in gardening, creating a beautiful and welcoming sanctuary at her home. That home became the heart of countless family gatherings, filled with laughter, warmth, and lasting memories. She had a special gift for making everyone feel welcome.
Helen was deeply rooted in her faith and community. As a devoted choir member and parishioner of St. Teresa Catholic Church, she lived her beliefs through kindness, service, and compassion. She cherished her small-town roots and the close-knit connections that often turned friends into family.
As the matriarch of her family, Helen’s love extended far beyond her immediate household. She is lovingly remembered by her six children; 13 grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; and 2 great-great-grandchildren, along with many extended family members and friends who affectionately knew her as “Grandma Fitch.”
Helen’s warmth, faith, and enduring love will be deeply missed but never forgotten. Her legacy lives on in the family she nurtured and the community she enriched.
Services will be held at St. Teresa Catholic Church on Monday, April 27. Rosary: 9:30 AM, Mass/Burial: 10:00 AM . Immediately followed by reception at the Knights of Columbus Hall.
