GRANTS, N.M. Spring sports at Grants High School are swinging their way to state tournaments.
The GHS boys baseball team ranked 7th in 4A received an 8th seed to the state tournament and will play a familiar foe, the St. Pius Sartans (9th seed) in a best of 3 game series starting on May 8 at 6 pm at home.
“We are a little shocked by the 8 seed,” said GHS head coach Mike Furebee. “But we will get to work and not worry about the number in front of our name.”
The Pirates previously defeated St. Pius 7-6 on April 4th and then defeated them on April 21 by a closer score of 4-2.
Coach Furbee who is busy preparing his team for the 3rd meeting against St. Pius said, “It’s always a tough match up.”
The Pirates most recent game was last week against 5A Los Lunas and in that game the Pirates made quick work of the Tigers 14-1. The Pirates led 3-0 and in the 4th the bats swung hard and the Pirates scored 10 runs to close out the game.
“We played well against Los Lunas–being extremely patient at the plate and aggressive on base,” said Furbee of that game.
The Pirates have strong 18-8, 8-0 record heading into the state tournament.
The Lady Pirates softball team came up shy and did not make the 4A state tournament, they were ranked 18th at the end of the season.
