GRANTS, N.M. – Local residents interested in birding, hiking or learning more about the area’s wildlife habitat are invited to join the Bureau of Land Management for a guided bird hike on the Narrows Rim Trail later this month.
The hike is scheduled for Saturday, May 23, beginning at 9 a.m. at the South Narrows Picnic Area kiosk. The outing is expected to cover about 2 to 3 miles of trail and wrap up around 11 a.m.
Evangeline “Evie” Forster, park ranger with the BLM Rio Puerco Field Office’s Grants Field Station, said the event is open to both beginners and experienced birders. Participants will have the opportunity to learn the basics of birding while exploring local habitat along the trail.
Those attending are encouraged to bring binoculars if they have them. A limited number of loaner binoculars will be available, and participants may also be able to share binoculars provided during the hike.
The Narrows Rim Trail area offers views of the local landscape and habitat that can support a variety of bird activity, making the event a useful opportunity for residents who want to learn more about outdoor recreation and wildlife observation close to home. Participants should plan for a morning hike and come prepared with comfortable walking shoes, water, sun protection and weather-appropriate clothing.
For more information, residents may contact Forster at the BLM Grants Field Station. The local office is located at 202 Smokey Circle in Grants.
