Restore Retiree Medical Allowance
Peabody Energy must reverse its decision to eliminate the Retiree Medical Allowance (RMA) program. I dedicated 28 years of hard work to this company, alongside many others who gave lifetimes of loyal service. I am speaking out today not just for myself, but for every employee, spouse, and child who should have benefited from this program.
This cruel cut has completely altered the course of life for my coworkers. Many planned to retire early to finally enjoy their families and live out the rest of their days after decades of grueling, hazardous labor. We fulfilled our jobs, providing a good life for our households, but more importantly, we generated massive wealth for Peabody. Now, the company is turning its back on us.
Distant corporate management in St. Louis is forcing this heartless decision onto our local mine leaders at Lee Ranch Coal Company and the El Segundo Mine simply because our operations are winding down.
Corporate executives are hiding behind a hidden clause they tucked into the fine print, giving themselves the right to kill this program at any time. They never explained this to us. Instead, management looked us dead in the eye, told us they cared for our families, and patted themselves on the back for creating the RMA. They knew all along they held the ball in their court. They intentionally used that small print to set a trap, waiting to pull the rug out from under us the moment we outlived our corporate usefulness.
Let's see how Peabody Energy truly cares for its current employees, families, and retirees right now. I hope they do the right thing, but like many in our community, I have my deep doubts. I would gladly eat my words if Peabody Energy corporate reversed this decision and proved they actually care.
The Injustice of This Cut
• Stolen Futures: Peabody’s choice destroys the early retirement plans of dedicated workers who earned the right to rest and enjoy their families.
• Corporate Bullying: Out-of-touch corporate executives are forcing this choice onto local management, completely detached from the human cost.
• Deceptive Fine Print: Peabody used hidden clauses to mislead honest workers who trusted management's verbal promises of family security.
• Left Vulnerable Before 65: Spouses, children, and early retirees face thousands of dollars in sudden medical costs before they are even eligible for Medicare.
What Peabody Energy Corporate Must Do
• Honor the Verbal Promise: Corporate leaders must look past their legal loopholes and fund the RMA bridge for every family until they reach age 65.
• Show Real Accountability: The company must fulfill its moral commitment to our community, regardless of how many operational years are left at Lee Ranch and El Segundo.
We call on our neighbors, community leaders, and elected officials across New Mexico to stand with local coal families. We must demand that Peabody Energy corporate stops hiding behind the fine print, stops scapegoating local management, and stands by the people who sacrificed their health to keep the lights on.
Sincerely, Freddie R Valdez Grants, N.M.
