MILAN, N.M. -Village of Milan trustees voted unanimously to offer Carl Ustupski the position of police chief. Mayor pro tem Vivian Brumbelow, trustees Roseanne Lopez and Ellen Baca supported Mayor Felix Gonzales recommendation to offer Ustupski the position. (Trustee Chris Archuleta was unable to participate in Monday’s meeting.)

Village Manager Sarah Austin said he is expected to assume his duties around March 8.

Milan has dealt with several changes in police department leadership. Trustees removed former MPD chief Pat Salazar from his position; they appointed an interim chief while the position was advertised. The village hired Lionel Desiderio, who resigned late last year. Desiderio promoted Gilbert Gonzales to lieutenant before submitting his resignation.

Lt. Gonzales has provided department leadership during the time that the position has been advertised since Desiderio departed.

Two candidates applied in the previous round, but the one Mayor Gonzales recommended declined to accept the position. The village again advertised the job opening; the trustees voted to hire Ustupski at the Feb. 8 special meeting.

Manager Austin acknowledged that Ustupski was the only applicant.

“I want to welcome him to Milan,” she said. “I think he will do a great job.”
