GRANTS, N.M. – Every single year the American Legion Post 80 puts out hundreds of crosses, each one bearing the name and service branch of the veteran it represents. These crosses are laid out once a year before the Memorial Day holiday, all in a county-wide effort to remember those who lost their lives fighting for the freedom of the United States. With crosses dating back to the American Civil War, the field was set up to honor all those Cibola County residents who lost their lives after an honorable career of service in the US military.
The field was open all weekend so that people could visit the crosses at their leisure; the event was largely successful, with people going to pay their respects.
Editor’s note: The Field of Honor is in its 13 year and the number of names keeps growing every year. Legion member Dean said to get a loved one added to the list of names is simple, just by contacting the American Legion Post 80. All that is needed is the name of the individual, the branch of service and the war they fought in.
