Kidnapping assumptions

CITY OF GRANTS, N.M. – Posts across Facebook have been warning citizens to stay weary of potential kidnappers. One post on the Cibola Bulletin, a Facebook page meant to spread awareness about the county, warned about a grey and blue Dodge Ram driving slowly in areas that children frequent.

That was just one of multiple posts across Facebook warning of potential kidnappings, Grants Police Department Lieutenant Jeff Marez explained that while people should exercise diligence, there hasn’t been any evidence of increased danger or kidnapping threats to the public.

“These are just assumptions being made,” Lt. Marez explained, “There was one post about a slow driving white car that was just a slow driver.” The lieutenant explained that in this instance, the driver was an elderly woman who “takes it upon herself to drive below the speed limit.”

“There aren’t any kidnapping issues going on at the moment,” Marez qualified, “If you’re worried, come see us.”

To better protect the oneself, Lt. Marez offered up some advice, “Be aware of your surroundings – always be aware of your surroundings – have your head on a swivel at all times, especially if you have kids.”

If you are in an unsafe situation, call 911. Lt. Marez said that the community is the eyes and ears of the department, and if anyone has any tips for the police department, to call them at 505-287-2984, the Grants Police Department is located at 105 Roosevelt Avenue in Grants, N.M.
