GRANTS, N.M. – January 17 presented two major fires that the Grants Fire and Rescue teamed up with the Village of Milan Volunteer Fire Department and Cibola County Fire Command to tackle. No injuries were reported at either location. The first fire engulfed the Desert Sun Motel, a historic building, located at 1121 E. Santa Fe Avenue; the building was abandoned and no injuries were reported. The fire appears to have begun at 7:30 p.m., according to a Grants Fire and Rescue post on Facebook. Two room of the historic building were fully engulfed as crews arrived on the scene, putting the firefighters into active mode. They worked quickly and were able to prevent spread of the fire to other rooms in the building.
Firefighters were then dispatched at 8:40 p.m. to the old Jaramillo’s Restaurant on Third Street, firefighters arrived quickly enough to avoid major damage to the structure. The fire appears to have only affected the back end of the building, and did not spread to the dining area.
Photos produced by Grants Fire and Rescue, show up close shots of the fire and quick actions by the fire departments which prevented serious damage or injury.
