COVID-19 continues to surge among school-aged children
CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. – The omicron surge of COVID-19 in Cibola appears to have peaked on January 21, this comes after Cibola hit a record high of 84 cases on average per day.
The omicron surge of COVID-19 in Cibola County has been raging since January 1. Omicron was first detected in the United States on December 1, and took a few weeks to root in Cibola, finding a nesting place in the county’s schools.
How do you know COVID has peaked?
Until more data is compiled by the state, it may be difficult to tell exactly when the peak is, however, preliminary data suggests that Cibola peaked with Omicron this past Friday. To understand the peak and trajectory of COVID-19 in the county, the Cibola Citizen watches the 14-Day rolling average. To determine this, we average out the number of cases reported each weekday by the New Mexico Department of Health. This number can help to determine the true rate of new daily positive cases in Cibola.
On January 1 the rolling average was 11. On the Jan. 5 the average increased to 17. By Jan. 10, Omicron was well and truly in Cibola, with the average daily case rate increasing to 44. On Jan. 15 the rolling rate was 61. On January 20, Cibola’s average rate was 83 cases per day. On Friday, January 21 the average increased to 84. Because NMDOH does not report cases on the weekend, the data released on Jan. 24 included three days’ worth of data, with the extra data, the daily case rate dropped to 81. It is because of this data that it appears Omicron has peaked in Cibola County. So long as the data continues to follow this trajectory, J an. 21 will be the peak.
