The Grants High School Pirate football team was tested mightily this past Friday as they hit the road to Bobcat country to take on the undefeated (3-0) Bloomfield High School football team. The Pirates suffered a 43-0 defeat at the hands of the Bobcats. “We knew that Bloomfield would be a tough matchup—they have two extremely talented quarterbacks and multiple receiving threats,” said Brandon Hernandez, the GHS head football coach of the loss to the Max-Preps third ranked Bloomfield Bobcats. “We knew they’d bring the pressure — we tried to get the ball out to the perimeter, but the Bloomfield spleen and aggression stopped that.” First year quarterback Tristin Fernandez was unable to get in rhythm for the Pirates. “He was under duress for much of the game—it was hard for him to get a clean throwing window,” said Hernandez.

The Pirates will regroup and host the Moriarty Pintos (2-1) this Friday in their home opener of the season. “The Pintos are another top 4A team—and we look forward to the unique challenges they will bring,” said Hernandez of the upcoming game.

The Pintos have just come off a 47-0 win over Newcomb High School and previously defeated Gallup High School 50-0 and their sole loss came to Albuquerque Academy by a score of 20-7. Friday’s game is slated for 7 p.m. and the game is a “blackout” wear your black Pirate color.
