The Pirates struggled against the seventh ranked Moriarty Pintos as they kicked and neighed their way to a sizable 54-7 victory over the Pirates this past Friday at the Port of the Pirates. “We walk away disappointed with the outcome, but we’re encouraged by the positives that we saw,” said Grants High School Head Coach Brandon Hernandez of the game with the top 10 ranked Pintos. The Pintos went on a 19-0 run in the first half and added 34 points to that lead in the second half for a total of 53 points. The Pirates scoring highlight of the game came when junior quarterback, Julian Padilla, connected with fellow junior receiver Knight Long for a 22-yard touchdown, his first of the season, with under three minutes in the fourth quarter. The extra point kick was made to give the Pirates seven points. “There were several key moments that could have changed the entire flow of the game—we failed to take advantage of them and it hurt us,” said Hernandez as he summed up the game.

“That’s the goal moving forward—take advantage of critical moments.”

The Pirates drop to 13 as they look forward to hosting the Hope Huskies (1-2-1) this upcoming Friday, September 16. The Pintos who are ranked seventh in the state, according to the most recent New Mexico Overtime Sports coaches poll, improve to 3-1.
