Pirates Ready for Season to Begin
GRANTS, N.M. - The Grants High School Pirates have just completed summer workouts and are preparing for the upcoming season.
“The process of installing a brand-new offense, defense and special teams is a lot for the most experienced players—our players have begun to grasp it pretty well,” said GHS Head Football Coach Steve Brown. “The kids, across the board, have made a commitment to working hard every day.”
At this point and time, Coach Brown has not decided on a starting quarterback. “I can’t say who our starter will be until after our scrimmage on Friday [August 11] — but we have a few guys doing some great work at the QB position,” said Coach Brown.
Brown is also bullish on his offensive and defensive lines. “We intend to put a lot of pressure on both the O and D lines this year — Ben Willcox is working hard every day and results are beginning to show,” said Brown.
When asked how the coaching staff was coming along Brown said, “We have a great staff of really good men, who put the kids way ahead of the Xs and Os. We want our kids to know that this game—our coaches across the board have also made the commitment to work hard every day and I can honestly say that this is one of the best groups of men I've worked with in my 16 years of coaching this great game.”
The team is just finishing their summer training camp, and are looking to a future of success.
“We just wrapped up our two-a-days camp last week and I want to personally thank all of the parents who very generously donated their time and effort to make sure that the team had a good healthy breakfast and lunch each day of camp,” Brown added, “This town deserves a winner, and this team is going to do its best to give them that.”
The Pirates will scrimmage this Friday in Gallup and play against three teams: Gallup High School, Miyamura High School, and an Arizonabased high school.
