MILAN, NM – Milan Police Department Police Chief Carl Ustupski, Interim Village Manager and Finance Director Candi Williams, and Milan Volunteer Fire Department Fire Chief Daniel Urioste gave updates regarding the Milan Police Department, Milan Fire Department and construction around the Village of Milan.
Ustupski gave updates regarding the Milan Police Department. Their two new squad trucks are still being upfitted, currently one is in use but they are still waiting on one. MPD expected that the trucks would be completed by mid-April according to the contractor but they have not been completed. According to Ustupski they are now looking at the trucks being outfitted by mid-June. They have been trying to combat the recent break-ins and shoplifting cases for multiple businesses in the village. Some of the ways that they are working with these businesses to combat the break-ins and shoplifting cases is to improve security by installing cameras and glass break alarms.
At the previous board of trustees meeting the issue regarding speed bumps that were too tall and damages caused by them to vehicles was brought up. Williams said that they are looking at ways to remove the current speed bumps and to replace them with shorter ones. The speed bump near the Fire and Ice Park in Grants was brought up as an idea that the village could get speed bumps that are similar, but according to Williams those types of speed bumps cost around $40,000 which is too expensive for the village currently.
Urioste gave updates regarding the Milan Fire Department. They have been working on training and held an event for the kindergarten students from Milan Elementary School. At the event the students were able to meet some of the volunteer firefighters from MFD, Sparky the dog, and PHI Air Medical first responders. Urioste and the other members gave an educational presentation regarding fire alarms and fire safety to the students and they also allowed them to shoot the fire hoses. Food for the students was donated by Domino’s.
Coffee with a Cop is held on the first Wednesday of each month at 11 a.m. and takes place at the Village of Milan Hall.
