BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. – As the recreational boating season launches, New Mexico State Parks celebrated the importance of safety during National Safe Boating Week, set for May 21-27. This initiative is a reminder for all boaters, particularly those visiting popular spots like Bluewater Lake in Cibola County, about the critical importance of wearing life jackets and engaging in safe boating practices.
Located in a scenic setting of pinon-juniper forests with views of the Zuni Mountains, Bluewater Lake is a prime destination for a range of outdoor activities. It’s renowned for its excellent tiger muskie fishing and offers a variety of water sports, including boating, kayaking, and fishing. The lake features three concrete boat ramps and extensive shoreline, making it accessible for water enthusiasts of all skill levels.
“There were ten boating-related fatalities in New Mexico in 2023,” said Manuel Overby, Chief of Law Enforcement and Boating Safety. “It doesn’t matter how old you are or how well you think you can swim. Accidents happen quickly, and if you’re not already wearing a life jacket you won’t have time to put one on.”
State regulations require that all motorboat, personal watercraft, and sailboat operators born on or after January 1, 1989, must complete a boating safety course. Additionally, life jackets are mandatory for everyone on canoes, kayaks, and stand-up paddleboards, and all children 12 years old and younger must wear a life jacket while on the deck of a moving vessel.
Wendy Mason, with the New Mexico Parks Division said that especially with the busy Memorial Day weekend approaching, it’s crucial for visitors to prioritize safety. This includes wearing life jackets at all times, designating a sober boat operator, and being prepared for changing weather conditions.
New Mexico State Parks offers free boating safety courses and vessel checks to encourage compliance with safety norms and enhance the boating experience across the state’s waterways. As the boating season gets underway, these measures are essential to ensure that outings remain safe and enjoyable for everyone involved.
Boating at Bluewater Lake is supported by an infrastructure that caters to both casual and serious boaters. The lake features three concrete boat ramps that facilitate easy access to the water.
1. Stoneridge Recreation Area: This main ramp west of the park office is equipped with three launching lanes. It’s a popular starting point for many visitors looking to explore the lake's extensive waters.
2. Las Tusas Recreation Area: Located east of the Dam, this ramp also features three launching lanes. It serves as a quieter alternative for launching away from the more crowded main areas.
3. West of the Main Boat Ramp: An additional ramp here provides two launching lanes, offering more options for access during busy times or for those seeking a different part of the lake to explore.
According to the New Mexico Parks Division and Energy, Minerals, and Natural Resources Department, these ramps ensure that boaters can get into the water smoothly and with minimal delay, enhancing the overall boating experience. The lake's 4.6 miles of shoreline and a surface area of about 1,500 acres allow ample space for boating, waterskiing, and sailing.
In addition to the structured activities, the lake’s natural setting also supports a more relaxed boating experience. Boaters can enjoy leisurely days on the water under the expansive New Mexico sky, surrounded by the rugged beauty of the Zuni Mountains. The maximum depth of 80-100 feet near the dam creates an ideal environment for more adventurous water-based activities.
According to ENMRD’s Bluewater Lake information sheet, boaters are encouraged to explore the hard-packed beach area on the west side of the lake, which can be used for beach launching when conditions allow. This part of the lake offers a more natural and rustic experience, perfect for those looking to escape the busier main areas.
