Mount Taylor Ranger District Expands Fuelwood Permit Sales to Fort Wingate

GRANTS, N.M. – With the weather warming and residents beginning to think about stocking up on firewood for the colder months, the Mount Taylor Ranger District has expanded its sale of fuelwood permits to include a new location at Fort Wingate, starting Wednesday, May 22.

Permits allow for the collection of dead, downed, and standing trees across various species in designated areas. Residents can now purchase permits in person or by telephone from the Mount Taylor District Office, the Cibola National Forest and National Grasslands Supervisors Office, and the new Fort Wingate location.

• Fort Wingate Location:

• Directions: I-40 to exit 33 to NM 400 to the town of Fort Wingate, then follow signs to the Wingate Workcenter/Administrative site.

• Hours: Wednesdays only, 10:00 a.m. 2:00 p.m. (starting May 22 until December 11).

Permit Costs and Details:

• Cost: $2 per cord, with a minimum purchase requirement of $20.

• Available Species:

Ponderosa Pine, Piñon, Juniper, Spruce, Aspen.

• Collection Limits:

• General Firewood: Up to 10 cords per household per season (until December 15).

• Oak Wood: One cord per household (until October 15).

• Wildings (transplants): Permits available for collecting young trees of any species except Oak, with a maximum length of up to five feet and a total cost cap of $100.

Residents purchasing permits by telephone must use a credit or debit card, and permits, along with a map showing designated collection areas, will be mailed within one to three business days. For those preferring to pay with cash, personal check, or money order, in-person purchases are available.

All collections are contingent on current weather conditions and fire danger levels, with no extensions granted beyond the specified dates.
