The 2024 Fourth of July in Cibola County was a day to remember, marked by the annual Wild West Days Parade hosted by the Grants/Cibola Chamber of Commerce. The event brought the community together to celebrate the nation's independence with a blend of local history, pride, and festivities.
This year's parade was led by Grand Marshal Vivian Brumbelow, a distinguished member of the community with a long history of public service. Brumbelow, a former Village of Milan Trustee and front office secretary at Milan Elementary, was honored and surprised to receive this recognition. With over 30 years of dedication to the community, her leadership and commitment have left a lasting impact on Milan and Cibola County.
The theme for the 2024 parade was 'Enchanted Route 66,' setting the stage for a series of celebrations leading up to the Route 66 Centennial in 2026. The Chamber of Commerce has also selected themes for the next two years: 'Rodeo on 66' in 2025 and 'The Mother Road' in 2026. These themes aim to highlight the historical and cultural significance of Route 66, leading up to its 100th anniversary, coinciding with America's 250th anniversary.
Matt Munson, president of the Grants/Cibola Chamber of Commerce, wrote about the importance of this iconic highway, “In 2026 we will join the nation in celebrating Route 66’s 100th Anniversary and America’s 250th Anniversary. Because the Mother Road is such a great asset to the area, the celebration begins this year in Cibola County.”
Weather and Community Participation
On July 4th, Grants, New Mexico, enjoyed a warm and sunny day with temperatures reaching a high of 91 degrees. The pleasant weather contributed to a fantastic turnout, with residents and visitors alike lining the streets to enjoy the parade and festivities.
Because of good weather, Grants was able to enjoy a spectacular display of fireworks that was hosted for the whole community. Because of the firework show’s new location at the top of the hill on where Roosevelt Avenue meets Iron Street.
