Crownpoint, NM Navajo Technical University is pleased to recognize Jonathan Chinana from Cuba, NM, for his outstanding contributions to developing an affordable Kibble Balance based on the National Institute of Standards and Technology. This innovative device is crucial in measuring mass, and Mr. Chinana effectively explained its characteristics and functionalities. The Kibble Balance is designed to significantly lower the costs associated with previous models by using LabVIEW to measure and display current from voice coils.

Jonathan passionately explained, “We are introducing the International Prototype of the Kilogram (IPK) issue and the concept of a Kibble Balance.”

The Electrical Engineering program at NTU is seamlessly intertwined with Computer Science, IT, and Diné culture and language programs. An especially noteworthy point is that NTU is the only tribal college with ABET accreditation, a pivotal factor for engineering students forging into professional realms.

Peter Romine enthusiastically remarked, 'Two of our seniors showcased their focused projects centered on the design process. They adeptly developed a presentation, a poster, and a research paper. Notably, the presentation underscored their ability to articulate their projects, and the paper highlighted their contributions to an esteemed engineering journal. These skill sets are indispensable for our ABET accreditation, and we ardently plan to include these stellar student projects in our upcoming annual report to ABET this May. These projects are invaluable avenues through which students amass crucial knowledge.'

Jonathan expressed gratitude to his instructors for teaching him electrical engineering fundamentals and his mentors for guiding him on the Kibble balance. He also appreciated the team's support in the previous balance project. Jonathan has been involved in leading programming prompts to help attendees direct their robots at many summer youth camps, including the NTU/NASA Robotics Academy.

'During my formative years, I encountered academic challenges and gained an understanding of the struggles of self-directed learning. Through introducing Native students to this field, we hope to ignite their curiosity and independent thinking, gently encouraging them to explore the numerous opportunities within STEM and paving the way for their future success,' Jonathan passionately concluded.
