Monaghan Fire in Mt. Taylor Ranger District Fully Contained

ZUNI MOUNTAINS, N.M. – The Monaghan Fire, which was reported in the Mt. Taylor Ranger District of the Cibola National Forest, has been fully contained. The fire, caused by lightning, was first reported at 4:30 p.m. on August 20 and quickly grew to a size of 0.4 acres.

Located in Monaghan Canyon off Forest Service Road 50 in the Zuni Mountains, the fire was met with a rapid and robust response from the U.S. Forest Service (USFS). The strategy employed was one of full suppression, ensuring that the fire was contained swiftly without further spread.

Residents and travelers in the surrounding areas, including those south of Interstate 40 near Thoreau may have noticed some residual smoke. However, with containment achieved, there is no ongoing threat from the fire.
