Camels are Back!

Body

Every year, the National Park Service (NPS) brings camels back to El Morro as part of historical reenactments and educational programs to highlight the U.S. Army's Camel Corps experiment in the 1850s. These events help visitors connect with the region's unique history and better understand the challenges of desert transportation in the American Photos by Jim Ninomiya

Southwest.

Camels were originally brought to El Morro in New Mexico during the mid-19th century as part of the U.S. Army's Camel Corps experiment, which aimed to use camels for transportation across the harsh desert terrain. El Morro's reliable water source, Inscription Rock, made it a crucial stop for travelers, including camel caravans, during their journeys through the arid region.

Thank you to the National Park Service and dedicated staff at El Morro who keep the history and heritage of this site alive.
