Milan Residents Asked to Complete Water Pipe Survey in Upcoming Bills

MILAN, NM – Residents of the Village of Milan have been receiving an important survey in their water bills, asking them to provide information about the materials used in their household water pipes. This initiative is part of a nationwide effort to identify and address aging water infrastructure, specifically focusing on the presence of lead and copper piping, which can pose health risks if not properly managed.

The survey is a crucial step in helping the village comply with federal regulations and complete a comprehensive inventory of all municipal water service lines. While the village has been monitoring and testing the water it provides, it lacks detailed information on the materials used in residents’ homes.

“We know what’s going to your home, but we don’t always know what’s inside your home,” said Village Manager Candy Williams at September’s Coffee with the Manager’s meeting earlier this month. “This survey will help us gather that information so we can make sure our water system is as safe as possible.”

The survey includes simple instructions on how residents can determine the material of their service lines, such as testing the pipe with a magnet or checking for visual signs of lead or copper. Residents are encouraged to fill out the survey and return it to the village with as much information as they can provide.

While Milan’s current water testing results show minimal traces of lead and copper, well below the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) regulatory limits, federal law requires all municipalities to submit a full inventory of their water service materials.

“Even though we’re in good shape right now, this is about ensuring long-term safety,” Williams explained. “The more complete our data is, the better equipped we are to prevent future issues.”

Residents are urged to fill out the survey promptly and return it either by mail or in person at Village Hall. Any residents with questions can contact the village for assistance in completing the form.

The results of this survey will help Milan make informed decisions about potential future upgrades to its water system, ensuring it remains compliant with evolving federal regulations and continues to provide safe drinking water to the community.
