Pirates Drop to Bernalillo 15-12

Long bus ride back for the Pirates this past Friday after a close 15-12 loss to longtime rival, the Bernalillo Spartans.

The Pirates who were leading 12-7 going into the fourth quarter hit some bad luck as junior running back Joe Clawson had a fumble at 45-yard line and in the subsequent possession, though the Pirates held them for three downs, Uriel Castro, the Spartan QB hit one of his receivers for a touchdown and they also managed the two-point conversion for a final score of 15-12.

Bernalillo, who scored a passing touchdown in the 1st quarter led until the second quarter when junior quarterback Tristin Fernadez found receiver Isaiah Ortega for a touchdown. The two-point conversion which was juggled and caught by Isaiah Ortega was ruled incomplete by the officials. The Spartans kept a one-point lead 7-6.

In the third quarter Fernandez on a quarterback sneak scored a touchdown, giving the Pirates a 12-7 lead which they held until the fourth quarter. The extra point attempt was blocked by the Spartan defense.

Fernandez went nine for 17 in completions. He passed for 168 yards and had one touchdown. Fernandez also carries 10 with 21-yards.

Andres Lazos had 15 carries for 59 yards. Isaiah Ortega had 3 receptions for 85 yards and 1 touchdown. Cardenio Chavez had 2 receptions for 57 yards.

The Pirates drop to 54,4-2 and will have a challenging game next week to wrap up district play. They will host the number one team in the state in 4A—the Bloomfield Bobcats who are undefeated at 8-0, 6-0.

Bernalillo (8-1,5-1) is second in district 5 4A and the Pirates are third in district rankings.

The lady Pirate volleyball team is 8-12,1-4 and will play St. Pius (163, 5-0) on the road on October 29th.

The Laguna-Acoma football team is currently 4-4,2-2 and will host Cuba High School (3-6,31) on November 2nd. They are 4th in district 1 2-A football just behind Cuba, McCurdy and Navajo Prep.

The lady Hawk volleyball team is currently 14-3, 6-0 and will play Navajo Pine (5-13, 2-4) on October 29th.

The lady Hawks are on top of their district (12A) followed by Ramah, Dulce, Navajo Pine, Rehoboth Christian and Hozho Academy.
