SANTA FE, NM – The New Mexico State Parks Division now offers its comprehensive boating safety course in Spanish, giving native Spanish speakers the ability to ensure themselves of safe and enjoyable experiences on the water.

The online course uses interactive videos and graphics to teach Spanishspeaking boaters important topics such as basic boating terminology, life jacket safety, how to navigate adverse weather situations, and rules of responsible boating.

A home study guide, also in Spanish, is available for individuals who prefer to learn offline and at their own pace. Those opting for the study guide can choose when to take the test that is required to earn their boater education card.

“From the comfort and convenience of your home, you can learn essential skills and knowledge to navigate New Mexico’s waters responsibly,” said Director Toby Velasquez. “Don’t miss the chance to enhance your boating skills and knowledge—and remember: life jackets save lives! Wear it! Chalecos Salvavidas Salvan Vidas, Úsalos!”

Understanding boating safety is not just beneficial; in many cases, it’s a requirement. New Mexico law requires all motorboat operators born on or after January 2, 1989, to successfully complete a boating safety course. Many insurance providers also offer discounts for completing a certified boating safety course.

The course is available online in Spanish and English through the EMNRD State Parks website, emnrd.nm.gov under State Parks and Boating In New Mexico. Sign up today!
