The Forgotten Train Robbery of Grants

Body

Cibola County History Museum has caught the “mural fever” going around.

In the picture, members of the Cibola County Historical Society admire the new mural on the north side of Cibola County History Museum, 525 West High. The Emory brothers did a fine job depicting the forgotten train robbery in Grants on November 6, 1897, at 9PM: “The crack little train Number 2 of the Santa Fe Railroad, pulled into Grants on it’s run from the Arizona Territory to Santa Fe. Grants was only a watering point for the railroad and a site for livestock loading pens for the few ranchers.

The fireman, Henry Abel, climbed down from the train and began loading and unloading supplies. Suddenly a burst of gunfire, a bullet plowed it’s way through Abel’s hat. Everyone sought cover.

The little frontier train was being robbed!”

Three men rode away with $100,000, headed for the malpais.

The rest of the story can be found at the Cibola County History Museum, along with many other narratives of early Cibola County.

Unfortunately, the museum is only open on Thursday 10 to 12 AM (a work day, clean, sorting, etc) and Saturdays 9AM to 2PM. We are short staffed and welcome all members and volunteers. There is no admittance fee.
