The GHS boys basketball team is recuperating from illness and injuries and are eager to get back on the court. 'At 4-2, I feel like we’re exactly where we need to be at this point in the season. We’ve had two tough losses, but each one has given us valuable lessons,' said GHS head boys basketball coach Landon Chavez. 'We’ve made adjustments, learned from our mistakes, and we’re heading into the new year with a renewed sense of purpose.'
The Pirates won their most recent game against Rehoboth Christian on December 19th by a score of 50-47. However, they lost the two previous games to St. Michael's (68-51) and Gallup (5653). 'Our focus is on finishing strong and building momentum for the second half of the season,' added Chavez
The Pirates have dropped from 7th in the 4A rankings to 13th in the latest Maxpreps.com high school basketball rankings. The Pirates next game will be against the 4-3 Del Norte Knights on January 2nd in a 1:00pm game at a tournament. Del Norte is 9th in the rankings.
'The upcoming games will be a real test for us,' said Chavez. 'We start with Del Norte at the Bernalillo tournament and we know they are a tough team that can challenge us in many ways---if we advance we play St. Pius or Cibola---both present tough match ups.' Chavez summed up the upcoming tournament by saying, 'We need to play fast, stay disciplined and control the tempo--the good news is we are healthy now and refreshed.'
