The GHS boys basketball team is making some noise in 4A basketball after defeating district rival the Belen Eagles in overtime this past Friday on the road.
The Pirates had a tough game as they battled with Belen (9-11,1-2) and traded buckets for most of the night in an intense game.
The Pirates were able to tie the game up at 58 all and go on to win the game 64-61.
The Pirates missing point guard Tristin Fernandez were unable to get passed Wingate on the road on Saturday following the Belen game, they lost 47-44. Melonas was held to 3 points and John “JJ” Horacek had 16 points in that game.
They will travel to Valencia at 8-12, 0-3 will play on Tuesday, February 4th.
The Pirates are currently 11-10, 3-1 headed into the game with Valencia.
The lady Pirates defeated Belen in district play last week at home by a score of 45-39 to advance to 9-13, 1-3. High scorers for the lady Pirates were Promise Garcia with 16, Demi Martinez with 11 and Aubrhyanna Garcia with 8 points. Next up for the lady Pirates be Valencia 16-5,3-0 on February 7th.
