The Pirates split this past weekend and went 11 after losing in another game that went into overtime.
The Valencia Jaguars, whom the Pirates defeated 51-38 at home on January 21, were three-points better than the Pirates on the road this past Friday. The Pirates traveled to Valencia for this game and battled it out without their point guard, Tristin Fernandez, who was out of town.
Senior Boudy Melonas assumed the role of point guard, and with three seconds, hit a trey to tie it up at 61-all at the end of regulation.
With 50 seconds left in overtime, Valencia led 71-70, then Valencia fouled the Pirates who then went to the free throw line and scored two free throws for a brief 7271 lead.
Valencia scored one field goal after that to make the score 73-72.
Grants subsequently fouled Valencia, who went 1-1 from the free throw line for a 74-72 Valencia lead. The Pirates missed the shot to tie it up, and Valencia pulled down the defensive rebound. The Pirates fouled, sending Valencia to the line once again. The Jaguars went 1-1 from the free throw line for a final score of 75-72.
The Pirates district record fell to 3-2.
On Saturday, February 8, the Pirates, with only slight rest after playing OT with Valencia the night before, defeated 3A Sandia Prep 69-57 in a non-district game.
The Pirates improved their record to 12-11.
Lady Pirates
The Pirates, ranked 14th in boys 4A basketball, are 12-11, 3-2 going into a big game on Tuesday, February 11 as they play the number one ranked team in 4A – the St. Pius Sartans (17-5, 50).
The Lady Pirates defeated Belen on January 31 by a score of 45-39. Lady Pirates then lost to top ranked Valencia on February 7 by a score of 47-24. Currently the Lady Pirates are 9-14, 1-4 as they travel to play St. Pius (14-7,4-1), another top ranked team in 4A girls’ basketball.
Hawks
The Lady Hawks 147, 4-1 will host the Lady Lynx of Rehoboth Christian on February 11. They are currently leading their district and coming in second at 4-1 also is Rehoboth Christian followed by Hozho Academy 4-2 in district play.
The Laguna-Acoma boys basketball team is 813, 3-2 and will play Rehoboth Christian (12-8, 5-0) on February 11th on the road. They are currently 3rd in their district at 3-2 just behind Rehoboth Christian at 5-0 and Dulce 5-1.
