The Laguna-Acoma Lady Hawks are also going to the big dance as a nineseed playing the eightseeded Questa Wildcats (20-6, 8-2).
“This season was really good,” said Laguna-Acoma head coach Nicole Pedro. “The team progressed on the floor each game—the experienced players helped the younger players all the time.”
A game that Coach Pedro felt was a turning point for the team was at a tournament in Santa Fe earlier in the season. “We played Santa Fe Indian and though we lost by three [points] it was a turning point for the team,” said Pedro. “Since then, we have kicked it into high gear.”
High gear indeed! The Lady Hawks went 16 and 2 after that loss to SFIS and accumulated a 9-1 record in their district. The Lady Hawks were the regular season district champions as well as the distinct tournament champions.
“We had a goal to be the top in our district and we reached that goal,” said Pedro.
Next stop for Pedro and her Hawks will be the first round of the girls 2 A state basketball tournament. The Hawks received a 9 seed and will travel to take on the 8th seeded Questa Wildcats (206, 8-2).
“Questa likes to trap from the get to–we are working to counter that,” said Pedro. “One game at a time is our mantra.”
The Hawks and Questa game is scheduled for Friday, March 7 at 6pm
