The Grants High School Boys’ Baseball team was originally scheduled a double header with the Gallup Bengals in Gallup on Saturday, March 8, however, due to field conditions, the Pirates ended up hosting the Bengals for one varsity game and one JV game.
The Pirates, on a cold blustery day, handily defeated the Bengals 13-3 scoring eight of those runs at the bottom of the second inning.
The Pirates packed into the GHS Spirit Bus and headed to Santa Fe High School where they played a double-header and defeated the Demons in both games, 15-4 and 10-1.
“We are still figuring things out—execution on the field was better and our place discipline was much better.” said GHS head baseball coach Mick Furbe of the Gallup game.
In that game Niko Young pitched two innings, allowing one run, two earned runs and four strikeouts. Daniel Garcia pitched two innings, allowing one hit, two runs, one earned run and five strikeouts. Josiah Marquez pitched two innings and had one strikeout.
When asked about his team’s performance at Sante Fe, Coach Furbee said, “We are definitely coming together— we got Dominick from basketball and he’s a big impact on our team.”
Furbee added, “Our plate discipline was great—we were patient, and we took what they gave us.”
Furbee also had praise for his pitching, “Our pitching is looking good in the last few games— guys are starting to hit their spots and that’s nice to see.”
Pitching five innings for the Pirates was Estevan Barela, who allowed seven hits, four runs, three earned runs and had seven strikeouts. Ethan Taylor pitched one inning allowing eight hits, four runs, three earned runs, and nine strikeouts.
Next up for the Pirates is Farmington. “That (Farmington) will be a good test to see exactly where we are at this point in the season.”
