Fishing conditions at Bluewater Lake are holding strong this week, especially for anglers targeting rainbow trout. The bite has remained VERY GOOD, with recent success reported using Rooster Tail spinners— adding to a growing list of effective baits this spring, including Garlic-Scented PowerBait, Chartreuse Power Eggs, and chrome Kastmasters.
The lake was stocked earlier this month with 6,000 triploid rainbow trout, averaging 10 inches in length and a total weight of 2,459 pounds, courtesy of the Red River Trout Hatchery. With the lake currently holding about 10,280 acre-feet of water as of April 1, according to the US Geologic Survey, conditions remain favorable for both trout habitat and accessibility for shore and boat anglers alike.
Based on the lake’s size and the current volume, anglers can expect a strong population density, especially near accessible coves and rocky shorelines. Combined with holdover trout from earlier in the season and minimal angler pressure during the winter months, fishing opportunities are some of the best we’ve seen this year.
Fishing for catfish has slowed somewhat, though a few bites have still been reported using nightcrawlers. Warmer weather in April will likely bring catfish back into shallower water and improve bite rates heading into mid-spring.
Fresh Trout for Grants Riverwalk Pond
The Grants Municipal Pond was stocked again on March 25, receiving 74 triploid rainbow trout from the Lisboa Springs Trout Hatchery. The trout averaged 10.3 inches, with a total delivery weight of 33 pounds. Though we’ve received no angler reports this week, the recent stocking means trout are present and catchable—perfect for a quick afternoon trip with light tackle.
Anglers are encouraged to make the most of these prime conditions before water temperatures rise and trout move deeper. For the latest park information, visit the New Mexico Game & Fish website or call the Bluewater Lake State Park office at (505) 876-2391.
