Grants Police Department Honor the Fallen

GRANTS, N.M. — With solemn pride and a sharp salute, officers from across Cibola County gathered Friday morning to honor the fallen ahead of Memorial Day.

Held at Grants City Hall Park, the review ceremony brought together members of the Grants Police Department, Milan Police Department, Cibola County Sheriff’s Office, and the New Mexico State Police. A 21-gun salute rang out across the green, a tribute to those who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty.

Grants Police Chief Maxine Monte addressed a large crowd alongside her officers, who were dressed sharp. Dignitaries in the crowd included Grants City Councilor George Garcia, who publicly commended GPD for their professional appearance and leadership.

Nearby, crosses were staked in the ground at Fire and Ice Park—each one a quiet testament to those no longer with us.

According to the Officer Down Memorial Page (ODMP), more than 26,900 officers have died in the line of duty throughout U.S. history. Twenty-six officers have already fallen this year alone.

“When a police officer is killed, it's not an agency that loses an officer, it's an entire nation,” said Chris Cosgriff, founder of ODMP.

This Memorial Day, Cibola County stands united—not only in remembrance of soldiers, but also of every man and woman who has worn a badge or served a flag.
