Eugene Albert Green was born in McIntosh, S. D. on August 6, 1927, to Charles and Beatrice (McGill) Green. He was born at home and delivered by his grandmother, Frances Green.
He attended school in McIntosh until the family moved to Rapid City in 1942.
Gene graduated from Central High School in 1945 and entered the Navy. He was honorably discharged in 1946.
He then lived in Custer, S.D. where he worked in the meat department for the Red Owl grocery store. In 1949, he moved to Madison, S.D. where he managed the Red Owl store's meat department. In 1952, he transferred to their store in Lead, S.D. In 1969, Nash Finch bought the Red Owl stores in the Black Hills, and he continued working for them until his retirement in 1989.
He married Evelyn Bristol Baker in 1949; she preceded him in death in 1974. He married Nickola (Nicky) Muir at the Ft. Meade Chapel in 1976. Gene retired from Nash Finch in 1989, and they moved to Grants, New Mexico, where they lived until moving to Rapid City in 2007.
While in Grants, he served on the State Area Agency for Aging for 16 years. He also served on the Community Action Program for five counties for six years. Gene was elected to the Grants City Council for four years and also was on the Northwest Council of Governments for four years.
He was active in the Grants AARP Chapter, serving two terms as the chapter president, and he was also an AARP District Director for three counties for three years.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years: Nickola-Muir; and three sons: Roy Baker, of Las Vegas, Robert Green, of Rapid City, Ron(Sherri) Green, of Spearfish; One daughter: Sheila(Rodney) Aspen of Deadwood; Four grandchildren: Cassie, Kayla, Jason, Sharah; Three great-grandchildren: Memphis, Aesa, Noah, and numerous nieces and nephews. Proceeded in death is Eugene's first wife Evelyn, two daughters; Ruth Baker, Mary Beth Green, three brothers, five sisters, four nieces, and two nephews.
A graveside service will be held on Thursday, June 5th, at 11 am at the Black Hills National Cemetery.
