As the 2024–2025 school year comes to a close, New Mexico’s high school athletes have left their mark on courts, fields, and tracks across the state — and Cibola County’s own student-athletes were right there in the fight.
From the chilly kickoff of fall football to the final swing of spring softball, this year in high school sports was packed with passion, resilience, and progress — even if state championship titles proved elusive for local teams. For the Grants Pirates and Laguna Acoma Hawks, the season brought moments to build on, and plenty of reasons to look forward to the year ahead.
The Grants Pirates baseball team put together one of the county’s strongest records this year, finishing 18-10 overall and second in their district (5-3), earning a No. 24 statewide ranking and showing solid consistency at the plate. The softball squad followed closely behind, ending the year 1410 with impressive efforts throughout district play.
Grants' girls tennis team showed out strong this season, closing the year 5-6 overall and breaking even in district competition at 3-3. In basketball, the Pirates boys team finished 13-15, while the girls team went 10-17, both navigating tough schedules and developing young talent for next season.
On the soccer field, the Pirates struggled to find their rhythm this year, with both boys and girls teams finishing 3-13, but the energy and dedication remained strong.
Meanwhile, over in New Laguna, the Laguna Acoma Hawks had reason to celebrate a standout season for their girls basketball team, which ended with a 22-8 overall record, a 10-1 district title, and a deep postseason run that affirmed their statewide reputation.
The Hawks’ softball team also turned heads, finishing 19-9 and placing second in their district. On the boys’ side, Laguna Acoma baseball went 12-12, and boys basketball posted a 1216 record with a competitive 6-4 district mark.
Football saw the Hawks go 4-6, building depth and gaining ground in a challenging 2A division.
While no Cibola County teams clinched a blue trophy this year, the strength of competition, heart, and hustle was unmistakable across every sport. With standout performances in both team and individual sports, local athletes continue to represent the region with pride.
What follows is a full breakdown of New Mexico’s state champions for the 2024–2025 school year, celebrating schools from every corner of the state — and offering a measuring stick for where our local teams hope to stand in the years ahead.
