ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — In a high-stakes interconference showdown on Saturday night at Isotopes Park, New Mexico United edged out Charleston Battery 1-0, handing the Eastern Conference contenders just their fourth loss of the season.

A late second-half goal — one of the few clear opportunities in a possession-heavy contest — proved to be the difference, lifting New Mexico to an 8W-5L-1D record and keeping them atop the Western Conference standings.

Captain Talen Maples spoke with determination after the match, praising his team’s control and resilience.

“I thought we were the better team. I thought we played the ball really well,” said Maples. “We had the better chances in the game, we had better possession, better play — and that’s how soccer goes.”

The 1-0 result came despite Charleston’s well-documented attacking power, which had scored a league-best 33 goals heading into the night. New Mexico’s defense held firm throughout the match, nullifying the Battery’s front line and limiting them to low-probability looks. According to Head Coach Dennis Sanchez, that was part of the plan.

“I love the energy that we had tonight as a group,” Sanchez said. “Charleston has a lot of dangerous attacking options, and outside of honestly two set-piece moments, I thought that we did a really good job in nullifying them.”

Charleston came into the night having won five of their last six, including dominant victories over San Antonio FC and Phoenix Rising. But New Mexico’s pressing game, combined with strong midfield work and an organized backline, flipped the narrative.

Maples noted the significance of matching up against one of the USL Championship’s top clubs. “The excitement was because we know how good we are,” he said. “I think player for player, we have just as good — if not better — players. That showed tonight in terms of being able to stop their front three.”

Despite leading the match in possession (70%), New Mexico only registered six shots to Charleston’s 19, underscoring the challenge of converting dominance into goals.

Sanchez acknowledged the need to sharpen the team’s finalthird execution: “We lacked just a little bit of sharpness in the first half specifically… We can always be better, whether we win, lose, or draw.”

Forward Fernando had a promising opportunity late in the second half, and Sanchez sees moments like that as the key to long-term success. “How can that be more consistent as the play goes on? We’ve got to be more clinical in the final third.”

Still, the win adds to an impressive home record for New Mexico United (4W-1L-1D at Isotopes Park), and serves as a vital confidence boost heading into the second half of the season.

As Maples summed it up: “This next middle point of the year is where teams find out whether they're losers or winners. And you want to be on that winning side going into the playoffs.”

New Mexico United now prepare for a stretch of road matches before returning to Albuquerque later this summer. The club remains one of the most consistent sides in the Western Conference and continues to prove it can match — and beat — the best from either side of the league.
