BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. – The dog days of summer are here, and fishing at Bluewater Lake has slowed to a crawl for some species. Catfish action in particular has been sluggish, with anglers using Rapala jointed minnows reporting minimal bites over the past week.

Fishing at the lake has been deemed SLOW.

According to the U.S. Geological Survey, lake volume dropped from 6,235 acre-feet on August 4 to 6,055 acre-feet by August 11. The gradual seasonal decline continues to reduce shoreline access in certain areas, though the main basin and eastern fingers remain wide open for boaters and kayakers.

State Park officials still rate boating conditions as EXCELLENT, with surface acreage holding at 626 and elevation at 7,372.76 feet MSL.

Visitors are reminded that Stage II Fire Restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake State Park. This means no campfires, charcoal grills, or wood stoves anywhere in the park, including developed campsites. Propane stoves are allowed only in cleared areas free of vegetation within a three-foot radius. Smoking is restricted to enclosed vehicles, buildings, or barren areas, and fireworks remain prohibited year-round. Motorized off-road travel is also not allowed within park boundaries.

The park is open daily from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. through October 30. For more information or campsite reservations, visit the State Parks website or call 505-876-2391.

Grants Riverwalk Pond No angler reports were received this week from the Grants Riverwalk Pond, and no new fish stockings were recorded at either body of water.

The pond’s last known stocking was in late July, when 110 channel catfish averaging 18 inches were released by a private hatchery.
