Meeting Thursday on Lee Ranch Mine Permit revision

Body

GRANTS – The New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division will hold a public meeting at 1 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at the Grants Public Library to provide the public with a description of the proposed revision to Peabody Natural Resources Co.'s permit for the Lee Ranch Mine.

Peabody submitted an application June 30 to Mining and Minerals for a permit revision to add a bond surplus account to the permit. The surplus will be calculated as 1% of the overall inflated direct cost estimate and will address reclamation costs that may arise from future unforeseen operational activities. It also will allow for permit modifications for those activities without immediately triggering a bond recalculation.

The Lee Ranch Mine is located approximately 35 miles north of Milan in McKinley County. The permit area encompasses 16,038 acres.

A copy of the application is available for public inspection locally at the Grants Public Library, 1101 N. First St., and the McKinley County Courthouse, County Clerk’s Office, 201 W. Hill St., Gallup, as well as at www.emnrd.nm.gov/mmd/pu blic-notices/

Comments may be mailed or emailed to: Director New Mexico Mining and Minerals Division, 1220 South St. Francis Drive Santa Fe, N.M. 87505. The state would appreciate receiving comments no later than Thursday. Direct questions to: Erik Munroe, coal program manager, at (505) 670-9997.
