Body

Kathryn Arndt

I was born in Newberry, Michigan, May 16, 1934, a granddaughter of German and Finnish immigrants. We moved to Saginaw, MI, my father's hometown, where my siblings Maxine and Dan were born. After the beginning of WWII we found ourselves back in the Upper Peninsula of MI to the farm where my grandmother grew up.

I graduated from Newberry High School in 1952. I earned a BA in English from the University of Michigan in 1956 and moved to Stevens Point, WI to earn my teaching credentials from The University of Wisconsin.

I first taught in Marinette, WI. From there I moved to Stevens Point as teacher and teaching principal. In 1968 I taught in Bradford, England after being awarded a Fulbright scholarship. I also taught in Chippewa Falls, WI. I completed graduate work in WI and MN. The latter at St. John's University In the mid-1980s I moved to New Mexico and taught in Crownpoint and Mariano Lake. St. Anthony's in Zuni was my next teaching position. I then started the preschool and after school programs at St. Theresa Parish.

I am survived by my sister Maxine (Bill) in Michigan with nieces and nephews and great nieces and nephews in Oregon, New Hampshire and Michigan.

I loved New Mexico, gardening, reading, and volunteering for Literacy Volunteers, Cibola Arts Council, and The Pantry. I also loved my Red Hat sisters.

My dear friend John, a former second grader of mine in WI, came to Grants every summer to tour, help garden, and keep up my home.

A funeral mass will be held at a later date with internment in the Grants Cemetery. Compassion Mortuary is assisting.
