Mary Nell Shannon

Mary Nell Shannon, age 84, of Albuquerque, New Mexico, passed away peacefully on May 24, 2025.

Born on February 19, 1941 in Jonesboro, AR, Mary lived a full active life of adventure from surfing the White Sands of New Mexico to fishing the clear waters of Alaska. She was known for her sense of humor, dedication to education, and love of sports… most specifically, baseball. Go Braves!

Mary was a beloved aunt survived by her younger sister Sue and husband Jim Bingham as well as nieces and nephews Kimberly Marlowe, Laura Kennedy, Michael King, Brian Bingham, Nancy King, and many great nieces and nephews.

Mary was predeceased in death by her parents Alvie and Chlorine Shannon of Clinton, AR; sister Catherine King of Grants, NM; and nephews Tracy King and Devin Sheets of Grants, N.M.

Mary enriched many lives through her love of sports and education. Mary achieved her Physical Education degree from Harding College in Searcy, Arkansas in 1966. Mary then moved to the Southwest to join an incredible team of teachers when she took her first teaching placement with the Bureau of Indian Education. Here, Mary made lifelong friendships who she embarked with on many great adventures. As the face of education changed, Mary found her skills were needed in different areas and she transitioned into nightwatchmen at Wingate High School where many other staff admired her. Mary’s time in education would come to a close but she found a different avenue to serve and use her talents in retirement in the role of Correctional Officer at Core Civic. After ten years, Mary would finally retire and dedicate her time to travel, visiting the National Parks, and rooting for her favorite teams. Mary spent her golden years actively living at Bear Canyon Estates, playing Bean Bag Basketball, enjoying Ice Cream Socials, and winning big at Casino Nights. To honor Mary’s adventurous life, a private family service will be held. Mary will be deeply missed but forever remembered.
