April is Community College Month, a time to recognize the powerful role these institutions play in shaping lives, strengthening the workforce, and expanding opportunity for all. While higher education is often framed as a singletrack path to a four-year degree, community colleges tell a very different—and far more inclusive—story. Here in our community, NMSU Grants stands as a strong example of that mission in action, offering multiple, equally valid pathways to success, each tailored to the diverse goals of its students.
For many, community college is a first step—and at NMSU Grants, that pathway is both accessible and affordable. Roughly one-third of students begin their academic journey at a community college and later transfer to a four-year university to complete a bachelor’s degree. This transfer pathway is not only academically sound but financially strategic. Students can save tens of thousands of dollars in tuition and fees by completing their general education requirements at a community college before moving on. At NMSU Grants, students receive the support and preparation they need to confidently take the next step.
For others, community college is a strong next step. At NMSU Grants, working adults are finding new opportunities to grow, adapt, and thrive. According to the Community College Research Center at Columbia University, nearly 48% of working adults have attended a community college at some point in their lives. Whether gaining new technical skills, earning certifications, or pivoting to entirely new careers, students at NMSU Grants benefit from flexible, affordable options designed for today’s workforce. In a rapidly changing economy, that kind of adaptability is not just helpful—it’s essential.
And for many students, community college represents a complete step. NMSU Grants offers over 19 certificate programs and applied degrees that prepare students for in-demand, high-wage careers without needing further education. Fields like healthcare, information technology, and skilled trades all rely on the practical, hands-on training that community colleges excel at providing. At NMSU Grants, these programs are not shortcuts— they are direct routes to meaningful, sustainable employment.
Right here in our region, NMSU Grants serves as a local example of how these pathways come to life. Offering both transfer programs and career technical education, NMSU Grants provides students with options that align with their individual goals—whether that means continuing on to a university or stepping directly into the workforce.
What unites all of these pathways is a shared respect for individual goals. Success does not look the same for everyone, and community colleges—especially NMSU Grants—understand that better than any other part of the higher education system. Whether a student is aiming for a university transfer, a promotion at work, or immediate entry into a career, their path is treated with equal value.
During Community College Month, institutions like NMSU Grants remind us that opportunity should be flexible, affordable, and aligned with real lives. In a world that often measures success by a single standard, community colleges—and NMSU Grants in particular— show that there are many ways to achieve it, and all of them matter.
To see these opportunities firsthand, the campus will host an open house on April 30 from 4:00 to 7:00 p.m. This event offers prospective students, families, and community members a chance to explore programs, meet faculty, and experience what their future could look like. It’s more than a tour—it’s an invitation to take the next step.
