In recent years, the strategic alignment of China, Russia, and Iran has emerged as a significant challenge to U.S. interests globally.
These three authoritarian regimes, each with their distinct agendas, are increasingly working together to undermine the United States and destabilize the international order. This concerted effort represents a complex and multifaceted threat, necessitating a robust and coordinated response from Washington.
The collaboration between China, Russia, and Iran is primarily driven by their shared opposition to the U.S.-led international order. Each country brings its unique strengths and strategic interests to this informal alliance, creating a potent force that challenges American influence on multiple fronts.
China: Economic and Military Ambitions
China's primary objective is to displace the United States as the preeminent global power.
Under President Xi Jinping, Beijing has pursued an aggressive foreign policy characterized by economic coercion, military expansion, and technological dominance. The Belt and Road Initiative (BRI) exemplifies China’s strategy to expand its influence through infrastructure investments and debt diplomacy.
Meanwhile, China's assertive actions in the South China Sea and its military modernization efforts aim to challenge U.S. military presence in the Indo-Pacific. Currently, there is more heavy military equipment (warships, tanks, artillery) than there was at any point during World War II.
China sees themselves as being blessed with a “Mandate of Heaven” and believe it is their place to control the land they deem theirs. Using inaccurately drafted maps from thousands of years ago on the land and territorial claims of different Chinese dynasties, Xi Jinping lays his claim to the land and sea. China does not appear afraid to flex his military muscles – whether against Taiwan, Japan, South Korea, or the Philippines – to assert its territorial claims.
Russia: Revanchism and Geopolitical Disruption
Russia, under President Vladimir Putin, seeks to reassert its influence over former Soviet territories and counter Western encroachment.
Moscow's illegal annexation of Crimea, its ongoing war in Ukraine, and its interference in Western democracies through cyber operations and disinformation campaigns illustrate its disruptive tactics. Russia’s energy exports and military interventions in places like Syria further demonstrate its capacity to wield significant influence and create instability globally.
Russia is a led by a dictatorial regime that seeks to take the world backwards. They intend to harm the US, as their leadership is composed of former Soviet and KGB agents. It is interesting to me that Russia is a nation ran by Soviets and Communists and yet there are many in the US who would support their murderous rampage against the Free people of Ukraine.
Iran: Regional Hegemony and Proxy Warfare
Iran's ambitions are centered on dominating the Middle East and countering U.S. and Israeli influence in the region.
Iran has worked to build a web of terror networks on a religious basis. Through its support for proxy groups like Hezbollah, Hamas, and various Shia militias, Tehran exerts influence across the Middle East, from Lebanon to Yemen. Iran’s nuclear ambitions and ballistic missile program also pose direct threats to regional stability and global security.
In fact, on July 30 before press time Afghanistan news began reporting that Iran has recently given the greenlight for these small armed terror groups to begin “full-scale” attacks on US bases across the middle east if – that’s the caveat for this – if Israel responds to this weekends attack on an Israeli soccer field that killed 12 children and teenagers.
While this news was reported, Iran swore-in its new president, Masoud Pezeshkian, with the leaders oh Hezbollah and the Houthis present.
Coordinated Efforts and Shared Objectives
Despite their differences, China, Russia, and Iran have found common ground in their efforts to weaken the United States and its allies. Their collaboration is evident in several key areas: China and Russia have provided economic lifelines to Iran, helping it withstand U.S. sanctions. Beijing’s purchase of Iranian oil and Moscow’s military cooperation with Tehran are crucial in sustaining the Iranian regime. In return, Iran supplies Russia with drones and other military equipment, used notably in Ukraine.
The three countries have enhanced their cooperation in cyber operations, sharing techniques and resources to conduct online espionage, disrupt critical infrastructure like water and power stations, and by spreading disinformation. Chinese and Russian cyber capabilities, combined with Iran’s regional focus, create a formidable threat to U.S. cybersecurity.
China, Russia, and Iran actively support each other’s narratives in international forums, promoting a “multipolar world order” that challenges U.S. dominance. Their state-controlled media outlets and diplomatic channels disseminate propaganda that undermines Western values and institutions.
The Impact on Global Stability
The coordinated actions of China, Russia, and Iran have significant implications for global stability and U.S. national security: Through cyberattacks, disinformation campaigns, and interference in electoral processes, these regimes aim to weaken democratic institutions and sow discord within Western societies. The erosion of trust in democratic governance and the spread of authoritarian ideals threaten the foundational principles of our freedom and democracy.
The involvement of these countries in regional conflicts exacerbates instability and prolongs violence. Russia’s support for Assad in Syria, Iran’s backing of the Houthis in Yemen and Hezbollah in Lebanon, and China’s assertiveness in the South China Sea and across the Asian Pacific are destabilizing factors that complicate U.S. diplomatic and military efforts to maintain peace.
China’s economic strategies, including the Belt and Road Initiative, aim to create dependency and leverage over participating countries. This economic coercion undermines U.S. influence and promotes an alternative model of governance that prioritizes authoritarian control over democratic accountability.
The strategic alignment of China, Russia, and Iran presents a formidable challenge to U.S. interests and global stability.
By acting in concert to disrupt and weaken the United States, these authoritarian regimes aim to reshape the international order to their advantage. A robust and coordinated response from Washington, grounded in strong alliances, enhanced cybersecurity, economic resilience, military readiness, and proactive diplomacy, is essential to counter this Axis of Resistance and uphold the principles of freedom and democracy.
