GRANTS, N.M. - The summer may feel like downtime, but the clock is already ticking toward a strong season for Grants-Cibola County School District’s sports.
On Thursday, July 31, Cibola Family Health Center will help jump-start that preparation by offering $1 sports physicals for all Cibola County student-athletes entering grades 8–12. The clinic, located at 1423 E. Roosevelt in Grants, will open its doors from 5:00 to 7:00 PM for affordable exams, helping make sure every athlete meets the state requirement of having a new physical dated after April 1, 2025. Parents or guardians must accompany students, and athletes are encouraged to download and complete their physical form ahead of time.
And if that date doesn’t fit into summer plans? No problem — appointments for regular wellness exams can also be scheduled at the clinic during its usual weekday hours.
While athletes make their checkups, the Grants High School golf program is searching for its next coach. The school is hoping to find someone who’s is as passionate about developing players as they are about the game itself. Interested applicants need coaching experience, a valid NMPED license, and, most of all, the drive to inspire student-athletes to grow on and off the course. Grants High Athletic Director Reyes Jaramillo is welcoming inquiries at reyes.jaramillo@gccs.k12 .nm.us.
GCCS has plenty to be proud of as summer begins: At the June 3 Grants Cibola County School Board meeting, local athletes were recognized for their standout performances at this year’s state track and field championships. Grants High’s Laila Martinez and Tori Felipe were among the talented girls honored, along with teammates Siannalee Chavez, Leah Pedro, Promise Garcia, JohnPaul Miller, Samuel George, Coudy Melonas, Nathaniel Saltclaw, and Cardenio Chavez. Over at Laguna-Acoma High School, Tagoya Pedro was celebrated for earning her place at state.
As these student-athletes know well, the work they put in today will shape the season they compete in tomorrow — and across Cibola County, the support of their schools and community is making sure they’re ready every step of the way.
