Cibola Fishing Report – April 15 – April 27

Body

BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. - Late April brought steady spring activity at both Bluewater Lake and the Grants Riverwalk Pond, with more people getting outside, more youth fishing in town, and wildlife sightings continuing to be part of the Bluewater experience.

No new stocking was reported in Cibola’s fishing spots.

Bluewater Lake

Bluewater Lake continued to draw attention this week not only for fishing but for wildlife as well. Multiple community reports noted bald eagles at the lake.

The most recent State Parks information shows tiger muskie fishing was reported as FAIR to GOOD when using Rooster Tail lures. The Cibola Citizen also received reports of successful trout fishing, rated as FAIR to GOOD with anglers mentioning Rooster Tail producing fish as well. For current conditions, anglers can visit Bluewater Lake State Park’s webpage or call 505-8762391.

Lake level readings continued their gradual spring decline.

USGS provisional elevation readings show 7,367.42 feet on April 19 and 7,367.25 feet on April 26, a drop of 0.17 feet over the week. That’s modest movement, but it fits the consistent trend seen across recent reports as the reservoir slowly steps down into the warmer months.

Visitors should also note that Stage II fire restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake State Park. In practical terms, that means no campfires or solid-fuel fires (including charcoal, coal, or wood stoves), and additional restrictions apply for smoking, fireworks, certain equipment use, and off-road vehicle use. With the park busier and vegetation drying out, following the restrictions is part of keeping Bluewater open and safe for everyone.

Grants Riverwalk Pond

Fishing activity at the Grants Riverwalk Pond picked up this week, driven in part by youth outings and school trips to the pond.

Community reports indicated PowerBait has been key for trout, and several youth anglers reported bites on corn on Sunday. Multiple bites and caught fish were reported, reflecting the kind of accessible fishing the Riverwalk is known for as spring gets rolling.
