Cibola Fishing Report – April 28 – May 5

Body

BLUEWATER, N.M. – As April turned into May, fishing in Cibola County continued its steady spring pace—good enough to keep anglers coming back, even as the big story at Bluewater remains dry conditions and safety heading into fire season.

Bluewater Lake

At Bluewater Lake State Park, fishing for trout was reported as FAIR to GOOD during the April 28–May 5 window. Fishing for tiger muskie was also described as FAIR to GOOD when using Rooster Tail lures, according to the most recent information available from the park. Anglers can check Bluewater Lake State Park’s webpage or call 505-876-2391 for current conditions and updates.

No new stocking information was reported this week, but the most recent confirmed trout stocking at Bluewater earlier this spring was significant. Stocking records show Bluewater Lake was stocked on March 10 with triploid rainbow trout in two separate plants – 3,500 fish (about 10-inch class) and 9,609 fish (about 7-inch class) – for a combined 13,109 trout delivered in a single day.

On lake level readings, USGS provisional elevation data shows Bluewater at 7,367.20 feet on April 28 and 7,367.05 feet on the morning of May 5, a decline of 0.15 feet over the week.

Visitors should also remember that Stage II fire restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake State Park. Under Stage II restrictions, campfires and solid-fuel fires are prohibited, and additional limits apply to smoking, fireworks, and certain equipment use. As always, State Parks encourages visitors to wear life jackets when in or around the water. Camping reservations can be made through Reserve America at 877-6647787. Grants Riverwalk Pond

At the Grants Riverwalk Pond, fishing is FAIR to MODERATE.

Anglers reported success this week catching trout using hot dogs.
