Cibola Fishing Report – April 7–April 14

Body

BLUEWATER LAKE, N.M. – While there weren’t confirmed fish catches reported to the Cibola Citizen this week, the Bluewater Lake delivered in wildlife sightings.

Bluewater Lake

No fish catches were reported to the Cibola Citizen during the April 7–14 window, though several visitors reported success pulling crawdads, and there were multiple observations of wildlife including two bald eagles and cranes spotted near the lake. Reports also noted heavy activity on the water, with lots of people out boating and fishing.

The most recent fishing report on record for Bluewater was received March 26. At that time, New Mexico State Parks reported tiger muskie fishing was SLOW to FAIR

when using Rooster Tail lures, and fair to good when using PowerBait. Trout fishing was reported as VERY GOOD when using garlic cheese.

On lake conditions, the most recent State Parks update available continues to list boating conditions as EXCELLENT, with a posted reservoir elevation of 7,367.730 feet (MSL) and an estimated volume of 4,135 acre-feet (last updated March 30).

USGS provisional elevation readings show Bluewater at 7,367.77 feet on April 6 and 7,367.65 feet on April 13, a decline of 0.12 feet over the week. That’s a modest drop and fits the gradual spring trend data has been reflecting.

Visitors should also remember that Stage II fire restrictions remain in effect at Bluewater Lake State Park. That means no campfires or solid-fuel fires (including charcoal, coal, or wood stoves), and additional restrictions are in place for smoking, fireworks, and certain equipment use. As always, State Parks continues to emphasize safety, including wearing life jackets when in or around the water.

For current conditions, anglers can visit the Bluewater Lake State Park webpage or call 505-876-2391. For reservations, visitors can reach Reserve America at 877-664-7787.
