Cibola Fishing Report – March 4–10

Body

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - The first full week of March brought steady, earlyspring conditions for local anglers, even as fishing reports slowed down again. Bluewater Lake remains open and ice-free, with boating conditions listed as excellent, while Grants’ Riverwalk Pond stayed quiet with no reported catches or stocking during this reporting window.

Bluewater Lake

There were no new angler reports and no new stocking reported at Bluewater Lake during the March 4–10 period. Even so, State Parks continues to note that Bluewater Lake is free of ice and open to recreational boating and fishing, a key update for anyone planning a trip as winter transitions toward spring.

New Mexico State Parks’ most recent lake conditions update lists boating conditions as EXCELLENT, with the reservoir at an elevation of 7,368.240 feet (MSL) and an estimated volume of 4,319 acre-feet, with a surface area of 431 acres.

USGS provisional elevation readings show 7,368.30 feet on March 3 and 7,368.22 feet on the morning of March 10, a small change of 0.08 feet over the week. In practical terms, those two sources tell a consistent story: the lake is holding fairly steady while remaining accessible for boating and fishing.

Bluewater Lake State Park remains on winter entrance hours through March 31, with the gate open 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. The shower facility remains temporarily closed due to lack of heat, with that notice posted through April 1. Fireworks are prohibited within the park, wood gathering for campfires is prohibited within state park boundaries, and OHVs/ATVs/dirt bikes are not allowed within park boundaries.

The park also continues to emphasize basic safety, including wearing life jackets when in or around the water. Bluewater also has an EV charging station on site.

For current conditions, visitors can check Bluewater Lake State Park’s webpage or call 505-876-2391. Camping reservations are available through Reserve America at 877-664-7787.

Grants Riverwalk Pond

There were no reported catches and no stocking updates for the Grants Municipal Pond (Riverwalk Pond) during the March 4–10 period.

For readers looking for a quick in-town outing, Riverwalk Park remains a good place to spend an afternoon even when the bite is slow. The park at 400 W. High St. offers a gazebo, ponds, an amphitheater, a playground, and picnic tables.
