Tiger Muskie Active as Boating Season Takes Off

Fishing at Bluewater Lake held strong this past week, especially for anglers targeting tiger muskie. Reports were good, with the best results coming on Pautzke Fire Balls, a bait more often used for trout but proving effective for muskie in recent weeks.

Among those reporting success was Saniko Nunez, who landed three tiger muskie on May 7. While muskie are known to be hit-or-miss, anglers using scented bait near brush and drop-offs continue to find opportunities— especially on cool mornings and late afternoons when fish are more actively feeding.

Trout reports were quiet this week, and no new stockings were recorded at either Bluewater or Grants. However, the lake remains healthy and accessible for shoreline anglers, and the onset of boating season has opened up more of the water for trolling and casting from vessels.

As of May 19, Bluewater Lake was holding approximately 9,039 acrefeet of water, according to the U.S. Geological Survey, with elevation readings placing the lake at 7,377 feet and covering an estimated 945 surface acres. According to the New Mexico State Parks Division, boating conditions are officially rated “excellent.”

Safe Boating Week and Ongoing Restrictions

This week also marks National Safe Boating Week, with state officials reminding boaters that life jackets are now required at all times on the water. That includes kayakers, paddleboarders, and anglers in small craft. Children under 13 must wear a life jacket while on the deck of a moving vessel.

The State Parks Division encourages all boaters to plan ahead, designate a sober operator, and take advantage of the free boating safety courses available at emnrd.nm.gov/spd or by calling 1-888-NMPARKS.

Meanwhile, Stage II Fire Restrictions remain in effect. All open flames—including campfires and charcoal grills— are prohibited, even in developed campsites. Propane stoves are allowed only in cleared areas with no vegetation within three feet.

Grants Riverwalk Pond

The Grants Municipal Pond remains quiet, with no angler reports received this week. The last known trout stocking was in late April, and while some fish may still be present, active angler participation is needed to track pond performance.
