Cibola Fishing Report – May 27 – June 3

Late May Brings Big Trout and Bigger Smiles at Bluewater

As May gave way to June, Bluewater Lake continued to deliver memorable trout catches— even as stocking slowed and water levels dropped. Anglers reported fair to good success using Orange Glitter PowerBait, especially along the east and southeast banks during cooler morning hours. Despite the lake not receiving any trout stockings throughout the entire month of May, the water still produced excellent fish this week—including a 23-inch rainbow trout caught on May 24 and a 22.5-inch rainbow landed on May 25. These catches are featured in this week’s edition and are a testament to both angler patience and the healthy holdovers still swimming below the surface.

As of June 2, Bluewater Lake held 8,438 acrefeet of water, continuing its steady decline from spring levels. According to the New Mexico State Parks Division, the lake currently spans 845 surface acres, and boating conditions remain rated excellent.

While trout activity may begin to slow with warmer temperatures, Free Fishing Weekend on June 7 and 8 offers a great chance for families and newcomers to enjoy the lake without needing a license. Whether from shore, boat, or dock, there’s still plenty of reason to pack a rod and hit the water.

Grants Riverwalk Pond

We received no angler reports from the Grants Municipal Pond this week. The pond was last stocked with channel catfish in late May.
