Cibola Fishing Report – October 11–17

Body

CIBOLA COUNTY, N.M. - Fishing picked up slightly this week with some mild activity on the shoreline.

Anglers reported SLOW to FAIR catfishing using hot dogs, especially near the rocky outcroppings and parkside drop-offs. Tiger muskie fishing remained SLOW, though several dedicated anglers still gave chase, reporting the use of chartreuse spinnerbaits.

As always, check in with Bluewater Lake State Park at 505-8762391 or visit their website for the most up-to-date information.

A fresh stocking of 4,148 triploid rainbow trout arrived at Bluewater Lake on October 9, delivered by the Red River Trout Hatchery. These trout averaged just over 10 inches in length and totaled 1,750 pounds. This is the first significant trout stocking at Bluewater in the fall season, and it’s likely to boost fishing activity as temperatures cool and shoreline casting becomes more favorable.

Water levels remained relatively stable, with USGS reporting a volume of 4,850 acre-feet as of October 17. Surface elevation stood at 7,369.66 feet above sea level, with the lake covering 484 surface acres. Recent rainstorms across Cibola County have helped replenish area waters. In fact, according to UC Merced data from Drought.gov, most of Cibola has received 150 percent to 300 percent of its normal precipitation over the past month. These conditions may continue to support healthy lake levels into November, allowing the lake to release additional water for agricultural purposes.

Boating conditions remain excellent, and no fire restrictions are currently in place at the lake.

Visitors are reminded that fireworks, off-road vehicles, and wood gathering are still prohibited within the park. Park hours will shift to the winter schedule starting November 1, moving from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. to the winter hours of 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Grants Riverwalk Pond

No new catches were reported this week from the Riverwalk, but the pond was freshly stocked on October 10.

The Red River Trout Hatchery delivered 200 triploid rainbow trout, each measuring approximately 9.5 inches and totaling 69 pounds. This marks the second fall stocking of the season and should help maintain activity through the month.

The cooler weather could bring better fishing conditions, particularly for families and casual anglers looking to cast a line in town.
