    The Grants High School Boys’Basketball team just wrapped up the Gallup Invitational Tournament last week and placed sixth overall. The Pirates are currently 78 as they prepare for district play starting on Tuesday, January 17 against the Valencia Jaguars (6-10).     The Grants High School Boys’ Basketball team went 1-2 at the Gallup Bengals Boys’ Invitational Tournament last week at the Gallup High School. On Thursday, January 5 the Pirates played and lost their first game of the tournament to the mighty Navajo Prep High School by a score of 6744. On Friday, January 6 the played Hatch Valley and bested them 70-20. Sandia prep defeated the Pirates for fifth place by a score of 72-49 on Saturday, January 7.

    If that was not a full schedule, one day of rest later, the Pirates played the Hope Huskies (7-6) in a home game on Monday, January 8 and were defeated by a score of 81-50.

    Jump one more day ahead and the Pirates will play in another non-district game back-to-back as they host the Gallup Bengals (9-5) on Tuesday, January 10 at the Port of the Pirates. Currently the Pirates are 7-7 as they prepare for the Bengals. The Gallup game will be the last game before district play begins.

    Currently the Pirates are third in their district just behind St. Pius High School (7-5) and Highland High School (8-6).

    The Lady Pirates split 1-1 last week. They defeated the Lady Patriots of Miyamura (3-12) 52-40 on January 6. On January 7 they lost to the 10-3 Thoreau Hawks by a score of 49-37. They will travel to Gallup High School to face the Lady Bengals (10-2) on Tuesday, January 10.

    Cibola County Sports Round-Up

    Junior Manuel Gonzales of the GHS wrestling team placed sixth in the 121pound weight class in the Conflict at Cleveland Tournament last week. Shondee Skyy placed fifth in the 235pound weight class.

    The Lady Hawks of Laguna-Acoma are 7-6 after a recent two-point loss, 39-37, to Crownpoint High School (8-5). The Lady Hawks will play Bosque High School (0-10) on Thursday, January 10.

    The Laguna-Acoma Hawks Boys’ Basketball team lost to Robertson High School (11-1) by a score of 73-38 on January 7. Their next game will be against the McCurdy Bobcats (3-8) in a nondistrict game on Thursday, January 12. Currently the Hawks are 3-8.
