The Grants High School Boys’ Baseball Team played a textbook game, scoring a quick run in the first inning however, after a great defense by both teams at the bottom of the fifth-inning, errors plagued the Pirates allowing for St. Pius to score three runs making the score 3-1. The Pirates were unable to mount a rally and lost the close district game.
“Not our best game— it’s hard to overcome eight errors—we had three consecutive games without committing any errors prior to that,” said Furbee. “We just unraveled in the fifth inning and with all that we still had a chance to win.”
The Pirates drop to 95 overall and 1-1 in district play. They will play Highland High School on April 8, 3-8-1, 0-1 on Tuesday, April 8 at home.
The Lady Pirates softball team is currently 4-7 and 0-2 after splitting there last two games. On April 3, they played St. Pius in a district match up on the road and lost 11-0 and on April 7, they played Capital and defeated them 12-10 in an offensive slug out.
“St. Pius was a tough matchup for us---we struggled at the plate,” said GHS head softball coach Victor Aldaz.
When asked about the capital game, Aldaz said, “Delilah Martinez, who came to the place with runners on 1st, 2nd launched a shot over the center field –giving us a 12-9 lead.”
“With the momentum from our game with Capital we plan on dominating Highland on April 8.”
